Petition of Moses Ehrlich: 1854 Senate Bill 14181
In 1854, Moses Ehrlich, the President of Ohabei Shalom, started a petition to dissolve the charter of the congregation because he felt as the number of Polish Jews coming into the synagogue was diminishing the quality of the congregation. Other members of the congregation responded with their own petition, stating that nowhere in the original charter does it state that only certain nationalities were allowed in the congregation. Moses Ehrlich’s petition was denied by the Massachusetts Senate and the congregation still exists today.
